Further down I-57

Stop # 2: As we continued down I-57 the plethora of farm land and overpasses, keeps our family alert and amazed at the quality sight seeing that is to be had. Our next stop along this fabled route of dreams is Kankakee, Illinois. What may draw you to Kankakee? There is rumor to be a boulevard of BBQ waiting to be discovered along the main drag. Actually, it is a boulevard of boarded up shops and BBQ business that have been updated to loan centers and fish fryers. Thanks for the updates Google.

But there are a couple establishments that have continued to survive. Such as C&L Ribs just off Court St. This establishment is run by a mother-son team, who moved to the town after they sold their furniture store to run a BBQ business closer to home. We snatched a serving of Rib Tips, without sauce to snack on during the trip. Our second location in Kankakee is totally worth it to go out of your way from I-57, and that is for the BBQ sundae at Bull’s Pit BBQ, on Station Street. Upon getting out of the car, your nostrils are treated to the smoky goodness and sweet smell of hickory logs being burned to lend their taste to the meet. Now back to the dish at hand. A wonderful blend of 2 different smoked meats (your choice, we opted for the brisket and pulled pork), and their house made slaw and BBQ beans. Now, our first experience with the BBQ sundae was on our first road trip to Kansas City last May. Upon reading about this concoction, I, Sean, thought that there was one of my ideas beamed to the mother ship and delivered to fruition in an alternate reality that somehow was delivered to this world by a rip in the space/food continuum. During this first trip, Sean was critiqued upon returning to the car, and was asked by Catherine, “Did you drag the cup through their garbage can from last night?” But after tasting this treat, she refused to comment on my cup dragging techniques.
Given that all of this food is going to end up in the same place and make a sundae of its own, why not enjoy the marrying of flavors that mix and blend as you bring forkful after forkful up to you lips. The BBQ sauce really ties the dish together, since they drizzle an ample portion between each layer. Once again, less that half is left for Sean to try, but the amount that was tried made him glad that Kankakee is only 4 hours away from Evanston.
