Day 2: Weather: Warm. Rainy. 45 degrees. We were hoping we had put the rain behind us, but the big cloud above us had been reading our blog and wanted to see where we were heading next—no luck for sun; at least it’s warm!
We got to the hotel, and enjoyed an evening filled with stir-crazy kids trying to get the energy out and parents tired beyond all belief. After a somewhat restless night, the kids woke up refreshed and ready to EAT! We headed off to Ryan’s breakfast buffet, greeted by, “Y’ins been here before?” Are we in Western Pennsylvania? And for a cool $4.99 each, kids eating for free, we enjoyed a nice filling breakfast, complete with gut-clearing coffee—perfect for the start of Day 2!

First stop: Metropolis, IL, “Home of Superman.” Ehren and Sean are ready, wearing their Superman shirts! With any luck, the rain will let up, and we can find a playground to let off some steam. We continued down I-57 to I-24, passing through Eastern Shawnee National Forest before darting off to the smaller Route 45 for the scenic path to Metropolis. We felt like we could have easily been traveling through familiar parts of Michigan or Western Pennsylvania, with the ups and downs of the road, lush wooded areas, and old rusted cars on the front lawns. The rain is still coming down, so rain coats were left on for the photo op. Sean has discovered that there is a letterbox hidden in Metropolis, somewhere near a see saw. Question: What’s it like to be a policeman in Metropolis? Is there a sense of importance? A sense of inferiority? Do you know where all of the phone booths are? Where do you get your cape dry cleaned?
After searching 2 playgrounds for a letterbox, and allowing the kids some much-needed run-around time in the rain, we got a small pulled pork sandwich from Big Daddy’s BBQ in Metropolis. We were the first customers of the day, walking in 10 minutes before the doors actually were supposed to open; Sean didn’t know his Superman shirt would allow him to pull doors off hinges. The pork was tender and Nice, sweet sauce. Pork was moist, and Ehren loved it.
